Routines with Amazon Echo / Alexa – Tip Series – Article 3

This is now the 3rd article in this series on the Amazon Echo where we look at follow-up mode & routines – if you haven’t read the previous ones here’s the link for article 1 and the link for article 2. If you have, let’s move on!

Having reflected on my initial ethos for publishing articles in this series, and other constraints on my time such as trying to promote my businesses, I think a more realistic publishing goal is 1-2 per month! The first 2 articles have 5 tips each, subsequent articles may only cover one or two depending on the complexity of the tip(s) being given. Some of the articles may also refer to YouTube videos on my channel, so don’t forget to subscribe to that too. You can find the subscribe button under my logo on this page, why not check us out on Facebook too.

Tip 11 – Follow up mode

Have you found yourself asking your Alexa several things in a row, maybe ‘Alexa, what’s the weather’, ‘Alexa what’s my flash briefing’, ‘Alexa turn the television on’ – well maybe not that last one if you’ve just started out with Alexa but we’ll get to that in later articles? By enabling a simple setting in your Alexa App, you can force her to continue listening after your first command, so you’ll be able to say:

  • Alexa, enable follow up mode [to start you off, this can also be done in the settings in the app – you only have to do this once!]
  • Alexa, what’s the weather [you’ll hear the weather]
  • What’s my flash briefing

Tip 12 – Routines

“Alexa, when I say ‘it’s party time’, play disco music”

Have you found yourself asking your Alexa several things in a row, maybe ‘Alexa, what’s the weather’, ‘Alexa what’s my flash briefing’, ‘Alexa turn the television on’ – well maybe not that last one if you’ve just started out with Alexa but we’ll get to that in later articles? [yes, I know I’ve just repeated myself, this is kind of related to tip 11!] Wouldn’t it be so much easier if you could just say one command, ‘Alexa, do my stuff’ – well you can, with the help of your Alexa App and Routines.

For this tip, I’m going to show you how to do that with a video rather than write all the steps in detail – I’ve embedded it here and it’s also on my YouTube channel.
